CRESTMANTLE GUIDE
How to Prepare a Credit Report Dispute
A clear dispute identifies the item, explains what looks wrong, and shows how your records support the correction you’re asking for.
Describe the item precisely
Identify the bureau and the account or field you want corrected. Explain what the report shows and what your supporting record shows. For example, if a report shows a late payment, identify the month and compare it with the corresponding payment confirmation.
Gather the documents that support the correction
Use copies of the relevant report section and records such as a statement, payment receipt, or account-closure letter. Keep the originals. Follow the bureau’s instructions on what to include and which official submission channels it accepts.
Use official channels and keep a record
The CFPB recommends contacting the credit reporting company and the company that supplied the information. Keep a copy of what you submitted, any confirmation, and the response. When the process concludes, check the updated report against the specific correction you requested.
