How to Opt Out of People-Search Sites

When you find a people-search listing that contains your personal information, record the exact listing and use the service’s official opt-out process.

Identify the exact listing

Check the details before requesting removal. People with similar names can have overlapping search results. Record the listing address and the date you found it, and keep that record somewhere private.

Use the provider’s opt-out instructions

Find the provider’s privacy or opt-out page on its official site. Follow its instructions for the listing you identified. If it requires verification, review what information it asks for and provide only what the official process requires.

Recheck the listing

Save any confirmation, then revisit the original listing after the provider’s stated processing period. Removal from one site covers that site’s listing. The FTC notes that information can remain in public records or reappear when sources update. Keep a dated list of sites and follow up if a listing returns.
